Praise Him in the Storm

I know that we are facing such difficult times.  One glimpse at the news will depress even the happiest of souls at the moment.  If the constant bad news about the virus and the economy weren’t enough, there are now protests around the world condemning the racism which led to the unlawful killing of George Floyd by police officers in the States.

It is important to read the news, to keep up to date and to consider carefully and prayerfully our own views, attitudes and feelings surrounding these issues and we may have to come before God to confess that we have not loved his people as we ought, that we have thought and acted in ways that are contrary to his command to love our neighbours as ourselves.

If you want somewhere to start or to continue your thinking around this, can I recommend this blogpost: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/george-floyd-and-me/

For some of us, we may have to use words of confession like those of David in Psalm 51 as we consider our part, whether intentional or not, in contributing to the pain that people are feeling right now:

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

It is also important, though, to remember that in the middle of all that we are facing right now, the truth is that God is there, that God is good and that God loves each one of us with an everlasting love that meant that he sent his son to die in order to defeat the sin and sickness that is currently all around us and bring us into a relationship with him and a promise of eternity in his presence.

So, we come to him in the middle of all of this to praise him.  The Psalms are a perfect example of being able to praise God even when life is not as we would like it to be.  Just have a read through some of them!

This song is a modern day Psalm by Casting Crowns. https://youtu.be/MgpaULjZOl8

I was sure by now, God you would have reached down
And wiped our tears away,
Stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say amen
That it’s still raining
As the thunder rolls
I barely hear your whisper through the rain
I’m with you
And as your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
The God who gives and takes away

And I’ll praise you in this storm
And I will lift my hands
That you are who you are
No matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried
You hold in your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise you in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry you raised me up again
My strength is almost gone how can I carry on
If I can’t find you
As the thunder rolls
I barely hear you whisper through the rain
I’m with you
And as your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
The God who gives and takes away

And I’ll praise you in this storm
And I will lift my hands
That you are who you are
No matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried
You hold in your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise you in this storm

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The maker of heaven and earth
