Deepening Discipleship with Mark
Week 17: Mark Chapter 16: He is going ahead of you
Monday: He rolled the stone away! vv 1-4
‘And they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”’ v3
These women had been powerless to stop Jesus from being killed and they are powerless now. They want to anoint his body but know that there is a barrier stopping them doing what want…need to do. What happens, though? They take the spices anyway and the stone has been rolled away. Are you facing something now that feels impossible but that you know you should do? Something you are powerless to do, or to stop? Walk towards it anyway and know that God is already there and will remove whatever barriers are in your way!
Tuesday: You are not useless! vv5-8
‘But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”’ v24
Note who Jesus chose to be the first to go and tell the good news. Once again, Jesus turns things on their head and chooses those society saw as weak, powerless and unimportant to do the amazing. Initially they were scared and couldn’t bring themselves to do it but we see later that it was a women who told first. Don’t ever feel that God won’t use you. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 said “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”
Wednesday: To good to be true? vv9-13
‘These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.’ v13
Despite having been with Jesus and having heard him talk about rising again in three days, the disciples were so deep in their grief and pain that they just couldn’t believe the news they were hearing, not even when it came from more than one source. Sometimes we can be so entrenched in the difficult things in our life that we are unable to hear the good news or to believe that it could possibly be for us. Whatever you are facing at the moment, however awful things may be or feel, the good news of the gospel is there for you. Jesus is alive and wants to bring you life too, in all it’s fulness.
Thursday: The Great Commission vv14-18
‘He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’ v15
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that this message was for the eleven in that room and not for you. We are all disciples and we are all tasked with bringing the gospel to those who don’t yet know it. We all have different gifts and callings but ultimately, it’s all about making Jesus known to those around us. Are you using your gifts to spread the good news? If not, why not?
Friday: Not on your own! vv19-20
‘Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.’ V20
We’ve done it! The whole gospel of Mark and we have reached the end! And what an ending! This last verse tells us that wherever we are, if we are working to make Jesus known, ‘the Lord is working with us.’ We are not on our own. As we share Jesus with those around us, he is right there alongside us, confirming that what we are saying is true through the power of his Holy Spirit! We may have reached the end of Mark but this can be a new beginning for us; a new partnership between us and and the God of the universe to bring the good news into a world which so desperately needs it! Let’s go!!!
